Our Story

Nauru has long aspired to the development of a robust Private Sector, in order to diversify its economy and create a sustainable future for future generations of Nauruans. Without this, Nauru’s National Sustainable Development Strategy (NSDS) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) would have remained unachievable. As a National Priority, private sector development had become urgent so prompt action needed to be taken. Nauru is now facing a moment of change, with a great opportunity to develop a vibrant private sector that can significantly contribute to resilient economic growth on Nauru.

Following the Nauru Chamber of Commerce’s (NCC’s) presentation at the ‘Desperate Imagination’ workshop in January 2020, NCC and ABV entered a partnership to develop a Private Sector Development Roadmap which would include a detailed evaluation of the unique Nauru economy, the environment in which it operates, and past plans and recommendations for structural change.

Recognising the importance of cross-sector engagement and collaboration, a Project Governance Group was established, consisting of representatives from the Private Sector, Government and SOEs as well as Community groups, helping to guide the evolution of the project and a wide range of engagement activities (incl. surveys, focus group discussions, interviews and research), which led to the development a practical roadmap, aligned with the NSDS, to support inclusive and sustainable private sector development for the benefit of all Nauruans. The Roadmap helps to frame the work of the NCC and informs the development of the NCC’s strategic and business plans.
